INTRODUCTION: To find out the differences of health-related fitness and isokinetic knee strength according to the clustering of metabolic syndrome risk factors.
METHOD: Healthy male elementary school children aged from 7 to 12 participated in this study. They were divided into 4 groups according to the number of risk factors; group 1 with no factor(n=8), group 2 with 1 factor(n=26), group 3 with 2 factors(n=25), group 4 with more than 3 factors(n=12). As a metabolic syndrome risk factor, TG, HDL-C, fasting blood glucose(FBG), blood pressure(BP), and waist circumference(WC) were measured. Health-related fitness were measure by 6min walk, hand grip, curl up, push up, sit and reach, and %body fat. Knee isokinetic strength was measured by cybex 770 at 60 and 180? /sec.
RESULT: TG(p<.001), HDL-C(p<.01), FBG(p<.01), BP(p<.001), and WC(p<.001) showed significant differences among groups. In health related fitness, curl-up(p<.05) and %body fat(p<.001) showed significant differences among groups. In isokinetic strength, absolute peak torque of right flexor(p<.05) and both side extensors(p<.05) at 60? /sec and both side extensors(p<.05) relative peak torque of left flexor(p<.05) at 180? /sec showed the differences.
CONCLUSION: Fitness other than %bodyfat and muscular endurance does not seem to be sensive enough to explain metabolic syndrome risk factors of non-obese children.
